My Mother is very hard of hearing. She needs a phone that would enable her to hear Can you recommend one ?
As stated above my Mom is hard of hearing and we need to get her a phone that she can hear on. She had a phone made by a company called Walker which worked pretty well for her. The one she has now is made by a company called Clarity which doesnt work for her at all. Money is no object as we just want her to be able to hear her lovely grandsons ask her for money( Ha Ha) Thanks for the help Jeff Brennan
You don't say what state you're in, but the Captel (Captioned Telephone) service is available in most states. Clarity bought Walker, btw. The Captel has the ability to caption the speaker coming into the phone if you live in a state that offers Captel service (it's free, and covered by the Relay tax on every landline in the USA). The volume on the phone is quite loud as is the ringer.
I am hearing impaired and work with hearing impaired telephone users at the company I work in, and this is the phone that I've recommended to the people I work with. If their hearing is too far gone to really hear on a phone anymore, the captioning allows them to read what is said to them (backlit display, large text), and they can respond in their own voice (this is referred to as Voice Carry Over VCO).
The cost varies from state to state, with some states providing the phone free in a lending program from voc rehab, and in others (like NH, the phone is available at a reduced cost). To buy it outright, the phone is right around $500-600 depending on options. I have a friend who purchased one in NH for $99.
