What is the best cell phone that I can get for free? My Att plan is almost expiring.?
First, your AT&T plan isn't "expiring" -- it's going to month-to-month, which is a good thing, since it gives you all the time you need to consider your options and do research. You don't have to renew and get locked into a new contract; if you are still happy with your old phone, then relax.
If you want a new phone, you might be able to do better than free. Take a look at Amazon's AT&T offerings (see the first link below). Notice that some of these come with a rebate. (The RAZRs and the LG CU575, for example).
AT&T won't want to give you such a deal on a renewal, but:
(1) It tells you which phones AT&T is most likely to be flexible on. Tell 'em you're thinking about switching to another carrier and apply some hard pressure. If their website shows a hefty price for one of the phones Amazon shows at one cent, they're pretty likely to let you have it for free if you apply some pressure.
(2) If you've been thinking about switching to another provider, you might be able to do better. Of course, that might be a significant hassle: switching you number over might mean you have a period where you phone doesn't work on either system. Talk to the service folks at another company about number portability and how long it would take to switch.
Finally, the "best" depends on what you want. For example, you might really want a nice-ish camera, but don't care at all about music capabilities ('cause you've got your iPod, right?). Or you might not care at all about a camera, but are interested in having bluetooth stereo music so you can leave the iPod in the drawer.
One of the best sites for comparing phones is phonescoop. Take a look at the two links below: the first shows all the AT&T phones they know of, the second shows them ranked by the rating the site's users gave the phones.
The RAZR2 V9 looks pretty sweet (it has a 2megapixel camera and that stereo bluetooth audio and takes microSD memory chips, so you can swap out music collections), but Amazon shows it at $49, so it ain't free. AT&T's website says they want $250 for it, which is funny: the huge price disparity between their's and Amazon's prices shows how much they hope to make by you being lazy.
I'd ask for the RAZR2, point out Amazon's price, and tell 'em you're going to T-Mobile or Verizon if they don't give you what you want. The more expensive the plan you're on, the more likely they are to want to keep you, of course.
BTW, I'm using a Nokia 6126 and I'm happy with it, which is one of the phones they have listed as free-with-2-year-contract. (Don't let them give you the refurbished one when the new one is listed at the same price, though.)
